Mindtraining: the gateway to nondual consciousness?

One of the goals of Mindtraining for Life is to offer people solutions to psychological problems. Traditionally, the use of language in scientific disciplines such as neuropsychology actually divides and disempowers people. However, where there is no alternative to using technical or complex words or terms in the content of this website, you’ll likely find an explanation on this page. If you can’t find what you’re looking for here, send us an email and we’ll add it as soon as we can. If you find any of the information here useful, like the page or link back to us, it really helps.

Mindtraining is a collection of approaches to mental health, personal and spiritual development. We offer our Glossary on this page, other mindtraining approaches may deploy different meanings for the same terms, particularly if they lack scientific training or direct experience of working in mental health settings. Even the term ‘mindtraining’ is often misused and little understood. Most traditional forms of mindtraining tend to have originated in nondual knowledge systems, whereas many contemporary forms of mindtraining take a strictly dualistic approach.

Emotional Regulation (ER) – Many of the problematic mental health conditions humans experience are caused by a failure to regulate or challenge processes dominated by emotions; phenomena such as fear, anger and jealousy. By learning techniques to balance emotions with reasoning, unhelpful thinking styles can be regulated and psychological suffering reduced.

Executive Function (EF) – EF is an essential part of your brain, it helps your planning, reasoning, agency and organisation, it includes different elements of your higher cognitive functions.

Impostor Syndrome – Generally seen as a lag between objective performance and subjective self evaluation. Chronic forms are very common, particularly in higher education, acute forms present high levels of psychological suffering dramatically impacting quality of life and wellbeing. Frequently a catalyst for perfectionist based behaviours. Linked to increased activity in the prefrontal cortex (suggesting excessive rumination), amygdala (increased anxiety and fear) and anterior cingulate cortex (error detection, fault finding and conflict awareness). Mindtraining typically supports long term erosion of process. More information here.

Mindtraining – Mindtraining is the evidence led systematic process of changing brain function and structure through behaviour in order to achieve goals and improve quality of life. Mindtraining is not to be confused with ‘mind training’, which refers to any exercise or pastime believed to lead to ‘training’ of cognitive functions.

Prefrontal Cortex (PFC) – Most systematic mindtraining draws on the PFC, it contains many of the components that support the Executive Function (EF) particularly the frontal lobes.
